The Estonian government established a strategic stockpile of personal protective equipment during the COVID-19 crisis in 2020 and 2021, and handed over its management to the Estonian Stockpiling Agency in the autumn of 2021.
The stockpile of personal protective equipment contains tens of millions of units of protective masks, respirators, nitrile gloves, protective coats, suits, glasses, visors, and other products. The Estonian Stockpiling Agency bases the precise nomenclature and quantities of the stocks on the respective recommendations of the Health Board.
The supply of personal protective equipment in Estonia is very good. Market participants, hospitals, and social welfare institutions also hold considerable stocks of personal protective equipment in addition to the Estonian Stockpiling Agency.
The current task of the Estonian Stockpiling Agency is to optimise the personal protective equipment stocks at their established level and to gradually replace the already purchased products with a delegated stockpile located in the warehouses of wholesale companies to ensure a more economical management and constant renewal of the goods.
